My personal mission
As someone who graduate high school with very little and somehow is on their way to getting a PhD, I have struggled with many things. From maintaining a decent GPA while working 40+ hours a week to constantly being financially burdened, life after high school was not easy. Life after undergrad became a whole new type of challenging, as my graduate research required me to learn many new things. This included teaching myself how to process and analyze high-throughput microbiome sequencing datasets. If you have ever tried to do this, you understand the difficulty in building this skill set. The whole time I was teaching myself these skills, I kept thinking to myself "it shouldn't be this hard".
As a PhD student at Penn State, I started the data analysis working group (DAWG), as a way to make it easier for people to learn how to process microbiome sequencing data. DAWG leads workshops every semester that are focused on sequence processing and analysis and we welcome people from all skill levels but cater to those that are neophytes. I believe this group embodies my personal mission, which is to empower people.
Sharing my knowledge and skills in a way that empowers others is how I choose to give back.
